What makes a website cost more

  • Number of pages, and whether each needs its own design. Pages that share one layout cost far less than pages designed one by one.
  • Selling online, bookings or member log-ins. Each has to be built, tested and kept secure.
  • Copywriting and photography. Many quotes assume you supply the words and photos. Ask for them to be priced separately.
  • Custom design or an adapted theme. Adapting a good theme is faster and cheaper; a custom design suits brands that need to stand apart.
  • Who builds it. An agency costs more than a freelancer but covers more skills. See freelancer or agency.

Running costs after launch

  • Domain: usually a small yearly fee.
  • Hosting: from a few dollars a month for a simple site to more for shops with heavy traffic.
  • Maintenance and updates: often a monthly retainer, or hourly when something needs changing. See fixed price or hourly.

Why the same website costs more in some countries

Mostly wages and living costs. Because a website can be built from anywhere, many small businesses now hire across borders: the same brief, quoted by a capable professional in another country, can cost a fraction of the local price. Check time zones, communication and who owns the files before you compare on price alone.

How to know a quote is fair

Ask for line items, check what is left out, and compare at least three quotes for the same written brief. On VouchQuote you describe the website once, at most three checked freelancers or agencies send itemised quotes, and each is shown next to the typical range for your country.
