How we work out price ranges
Every service page, guide and job shows a typical price. Here is exactly where those numbers come from and what they do and don’t tell you.
Where the starting ranges come from
Each service starts with a typical UK range set by the VouchQuote team for work done by independent freelancers and small agencies. It is an editorial estimate, not a quote: it describes what most ordinary projects cost, excluding VAT, and leaves out the very cheapest and the most complex work.
How a city changes the range
Costs differ around the country, so each city has a price index that scales the UK range up or down. London is the highest at 25% above the UK figure; Sheffield is the lowest at 10% below it. Results are rounded to the nearest £10.
When real data takes over
Once at least five quotes have been accepted through VouchQuote for a service in a city within the last twelve months, the range shown on a job there switches from our estimate to real figures: the middle half of accepted prices (25th to 75th percentile). Your job page says which of the two you are looking at.
How quotes are flagged
- A quote more than 25% above the top of the range is marked as well above the typical range.
- A quote more than 40% below the bottom is marked as unusually low, so you can check what is left out.
- Quotes with no price breakdown or no warranty are marked too.
A flag is a prompt to ask a question, not a verdict. A higher price can be fair for more experience or a wider scope.
How the cost calculators relate to these ranges
The cost calculators use the same guide prices, broken down by the choices that move a price most. Because they can add up several demanding options at once, their top figure can sit above the typical range shown here, which describes ordinary projects.
